ANASTASIADE'S MANSION AND TOBACCO HOUSE
Drama, Greece
The Cultural Center at the historic Tobacco house at Drama is the first systematic Tobacco house of the city, in a well-known region for its top quality of tobacco production. It is interesting to point that soon after this building, almost 40 years later; Drama possessed a large amount of Tobacco houses. It is built in the late nineteenth century in 1875.
The project is a useful example of the enhancement and reuse of historic buildings, which is fully in line with the most recent specifications and has a remarkably positive social impact. The architectural study enhanced the value of the historical building, through the proposal to reuse it with the necessary modifications, so as to satisfy the new needs for contemporary exhibitions.
The idea of installing a cultural centre has upgraded a wonderful but neglected area of the city. Themodification to accommodate educational programs and to facilitate visitors’ needs, respects completely the ensemble. What used to be abandoned, before the project, has become an open and vital node in the city.
