HOUSE OF MOSAICS

Sparta, Greece

Although in the center of the city of Sparta, the mosaic of Europe and the mosaic of Orpheus, well known to experts, were unaccessible to the public, in a completely degraded environment. Τhe entire plot was enclosed with walls. The mosaics were  protected in late 19th century by a shed. In the meantime the structure became a warehouse for other mosaics.
The visions of the architectural study were the opening of the exhibits to the citizens and visitors of Sparta, the expansion of the public space, and the import of a new neccesary structures and facilities  for the visit of the site and for educational activities.
The space in front of the mosaics acquired the character of a small square, a destination and meeting place, with space for various activities, which functions as the new landmark of the city in relation with the cultural heritage.
