PARTIAL RESTORATION OF THE STOAS’ ROOF OF ANCIENT MESSENE’S GYMNASIUM

Messene, Greece

A new roof was inserted as a recreation of the ancient stoa at the NE corner of the Gymnasium. The study aimed to restore the interior space of stoas creating a sheltered place as an information and exhibition place and  In the same time to offer to the visitor the total impression of  the aspect of the lighten by the sun colonnade in front of the shaded dark but cool inner space.
The new construction does not harm physically or aesthetically the restored monument. Its metallic columns are hidden since their density allows to be consisted by few thin elements. The roof will allow future conservation.
